A TWO DAY (2) FACILITY MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR PROJECT MANAGERS AND DESIGN STAFF
DAY 1 Course Code: FMC-2

AM

  • Basics of sound and types of sound waves.
  • Frequency and properties of sound waves.
  • The logarithmic (log) scale for sound measurements.
  • Weighting scales for sound; dB, dBA, …., etc.
  • Working with logs and sound levels.
  • Demo of equipment for measuring sound.
  • Calculation workshop using PC's and free software given to the delegates.
LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

PM

  • Effects of noise on offices.
  • Sound transmission, absorption, reflection and diffraction.
  • Definitions of TL, STC, CAC, NR, RT.
  • Use of instruments and measurement workshop.
  • Theory of sound barriers and office partitions.
  • Sound and vibration level criteria in offices due to external and internal sources (NC, RC, dBA, NEF,…, etc.).
  • Sound propagation inside offices.
  • Mechanical systems noise and vibration; sources, transmission and propagation. Examples: diffusers, VAV boxes, duct breakout noise and floor vibration, …, etc.



DAY 2

AM

  • Noise transmission through partitions, effects of gaps, and composite transmission loss of partitions:
    • Block walls and composites
    • Demountable partitions
    • Drywall partitions
  • Transmission through glass partitions.
  • Sound absorption in offices and total absorption:
    • Carpets
    • Ceilings
    • Special panels
  • Feasible noise control measures for offices; do's and don’t's:
    • HVAC and mechanical equipment
    • Open scape offices
    • Partitions and private offices
  • Design of partitions in open scape offices; walls, floors, ceiling, furniture, lighting.
LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

PM

  • Sound masking systems, demos and actual measurements.
  • Special problems and case history applications:
    • Computer rooms
    • Public and interview areas
    • Boardroom acoustics
    • Training facilities
    • etc.
  • Property acquisition procedures.
  • Specification writing and field procedures.
  • Open forum: General discussion, questions and answers.




A Certificate of Attendance will be issued by the Institute for this course for delegates who attend the full training course.

A CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE WILL BE ISSUED

WHAT TO BRING TO THE COURSE?

Course notes and/or a course manual developed by SS Wilson Associates will be provided to the delegates.

The delegates are expected to bring with them the following items:

  1. Any printed information on some of their local procedures, policies, by-laws, guidelines, etc. related to noise; if any.
  2. Download a copy of the following Government of Ontario publications from their respective websites:
    3404e Information to be Submitted for Approval of Stationary Sources of Sound (NPC- 233)
    3406 Sound Level Limits for Stationary Sources in Class 1 & 2 Areas (Urban) (NPC- 205)
  3. Other reference publications that may be obtained by the delegates for further reference purposes.

  5. The use of cameras or recording devices are not accepted during the lectures held inside the lecture rooms.

The Institute will provide dell laptop computers for use by the delegates at all times (for maximum exchange of benefit, one laptop will be assigned to each pair of delegates) as well as free calculation software developed by SS Wilson Associates, Consulting Engineers (one copy per delegate).

Course Fees: $1,200.00


IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Institute staff is also prepared to deliver similar seminars and courses on noise groups of government officials in their offices provided that suitable lecture rooms are made available. Substitute material will be presented in lieu of the field trips (field trips may still be performed based on suitable sites to be selected by the government officials in their locale).
