NOISE IN THE WORK PLACE
A TWO (2) DAY COURSE ON OCCUPATIONAL NOISE FOR PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS AND SAFETY INSPECTORS

DAY 1

Course Code: ONC-2

What is sound and types of sound waves
Frequency, wave-length and importance of frequency
Properties of sound waves
The logarithmic (log) scale for sound; dB
Weighting scales; dBA
Sound power vs. sound pressure levels
Calculation workshop (working with logs, additions, etc.) using PC's and free software provided to the delegates
The concept of Leq, dose, how to assess overtime, etc.
Energy averaging sound levels, Leq (level vs. time trade-off) and calculation workshop using PC's and free software provided.

LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

Propagation of noise; outside and inside building.
Effects of noise on workers in the work place; hearing loss, speech communication.
Type of sound level meters and general classification.
Measuring sound levels and demonstration of equipment.
Sources of noises in the work place, sampling procedures and examples.
Measurement workshop (steady noise, intermittent noise, variable noise, …, etc.).
Recommended measurement procedures and assessments of noise in the workplace.

DAY 2

Engineering noise control measures:
- Concept of sound barriers
- Design of noise enclosures
- Typical products for noise control
- Acoustic partitions
- Sound absorbing materials
- Mufflers, silencers
The human ear and types of hearing loss.
Hearing levels and audiometric tests.
Human body exposure to vibration.

LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for noise:
- Code for audiometry of workers
- Code for noise measurements
- Code for medical surveillance of workers
- Code for hearing protection
Case history of noise inside plants.
Selection of hearing protectors.
Open Forum: Discussion, questions and answers.

A Certificate of Attendance will be issued by the Institute for this course for delegates who attend the full training course.

A CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE WILL BE ISSUED

WHAT TO BRING TO THE COURSE?

Course notes and/or a course manual developed by SS Wilson Associates will be provided to the delegates.

The delegates are expected to bring with them the following items:

Any printed information on some of their local procedures, policies, by-laws, guidelines, etc. related to noise; if any.
Other reference publications that may be obtained by the delegates for further reference purposes.

The use of cameras or recording devices are not accepted during the lectures held inside the lecture rooms.

The Institute will provide dell laptop computers for use by the delegates at all times (for maximum exchange of benefit, one laptop will be assigned to each pair of delegates) as well as free calculation software developed by SS Wilson Associates, Consulting Engineers (one copy per delegate).

Course Fees: $1,200.00

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Institute staff is also prepared to deliver similar seminars and courses on noise groups of government officials in their offices provided that suitable lecture rooms are made available. Substitute material will be presented in lieu of the field trips (field trips may still be performed based on suitable sites to be selected by the government officials in their locale).
