ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL OF NOISE AND VIBRATION DUE TO PITS, QUARRIES AND AGGREGATE OPERATIONS
A TWO (2) DAY COURSE FOR PITS, QUARRIES AND NATURAL RESOURCES PROFESSIONALS/ MANAGERS
DAY 1 Course Code: PQC-2

AM

  • Basics of acoustics, vibrations, sound waves, properties of sound waves.
  • Sound level measurements and sound level descriptors, dB, dBA, dBF, dBAi, Leq, Ln, …., etc.
  • Calculation workshop on PC's using provided free technical software for adding, averaging and manipulating sound levels' time - level tradeoffs, etc.
  • Importance of using Ln sound levels for some investigation in specific areas where measurements are difficult due to extraneous sources.
  • Indoor measurement workshop using sound level instrumentation and other complementary devices.
LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

PM

  • Typical sources of noise and vibration found in pits and quarries and their noise potential.
  • Sound and vibration propagation outdoors and simple procedures.
  • Overview of the Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Natural Resources noise programs; Approvals, abatement, specific land use plan reviews.
  • Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Natural Resources policies, guidelines, provisions under the Environmental Protection Act and P & Q Act for noise.
  • Application of the Ministry of the Environment's recommended technical criteria for new stationary sources of noise that apply to equipment commonly found in pits and quarries, NPC-103, NPC-205, …., etc.

DAY 2

AM

  • Traffic noise modelling for stationary sources assessment; ORNAMENT (STAMSON) procedures, measurements, accuracy, application, etc.
  • Calculation workshop, solved examples, and the application of various correction factors.
  • Measurement procedures; NPC-103 in more details.
  • Components of noise study reports submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of the Environment.
  • Noise and vibration control measures for pits and quarries; applications, examples and limitations.
LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

PM

  • Check list for review of noise study reports submitted for a C of A.
  • Ministry of the Environment requirements for Audit Reports.
  • Review of Case Studies for:
    • A new pit to include numerous sources
    • Certificate of Approvals for some equipment
  • Open Forum: Group discussion, questions and answers.
A Certificate of Attendance will be issued by the Institute for this course for delegates who attend the full training course.

Course notes and/or a course manual developed by SS Wilson Associates will be provided to the delegates.

The Institute will provide dell laptop computers for use by the delegates at all times (for maximum exchange of benefit, one laptop will be assigned to each pair of delegates) as well as free calculation software developed by SS Wilson Associates, Consulting Engineers (one copy per delegate).

Course Fees: $1,200.00


IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Institute staff is also prepared to deliver similar seminars and courses on noise groups of government officials in their offices provided that suitable lecture rooms are made available. Substitute material will be presented in lieu of the field trips (field trips may still be performed based on suitable sites to be selected by the government officials in their locale).
