TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS FOR NOISE AND VIBRATION
A TWO (2) DAY COURSE FOR TRANSPORTATION PLANNERS, PROJECT ENGINEERS AND ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNERS
DAY 1 Course Code: TPC-2

AM

  • Basic information about sound waves, frequency and properties of sound waves.
  • How sound is measured, sound level descriptors, dB, dBA, Leq, …., etc.
  • Simple demonstration of sound levels and sound measurement instruments.
  • Calculation workshop; Leq conversions, dB addition, etc. using PC's and free software provided to the delegates.
  • Effects of transportation noise on people.
  • Parameters affecting transportation noise generation and outdoor propagation.

LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

PM

  • Theory of sound barriers.
  • Control measures for transportation corridors.
  • Sound level criteria MOE/MTO Noise Protocol, Ministry of the Environment, EA guidelines and local municipal noise control policies and guidelines.
  • Measurement workshop (outside) weather permitting.
  • Municipal land use policies for noise and compatibility with transportation sources of noise.
  • Retrofit policies of municipal/provincial roads with sound barriers; how they are performed, priority, funding, etc.
  • Modelling and/or measurements of transportation sources and special cases.

DAY 2

AM

  • Extensive PC demonstrations and modelling of traffic noise using the Ministry of the Environment ORNAMENT and STEAM (STAMSON) program; details, parameters, limitations, accuracy and application (copy of the Ministry of the Environment program will be provided to the delegates).
  • Solved examples (text, input data, drawings and computer files will be provided).
  • Numerous examples will be demonstrated in a workshop style for cases without and with noise control measures (barriers, topography, ….etc.).

LUNCH: Will be served 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

PM

  • Workshop and calculations of several real life examples of transportation corridors
  • Reporting and components of noise in an EA report.
  • Comparing transportation route alternatives.
  • Review and approval of consultants noise study reports:
    • Initial screening and check list of requirements
    • Common pitfalls of some noise studies
  • Terms of reference for transportation noise studies.
  • Open Forum: Group discussion, questions, answers.

A Certificate of Attendance will be issued by the Institute for this course for delegates who attend the full training course.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE COURSE?

Course notes and/or a course manual developed by SS Wilson Associates will be provided to the delegates.

The delegates are expected to bring with them the following items:

  1. Any printed information on some of their local procedures, policies, by-laws, guidelines, etc. related to noise; if any.

The Institute will provide dell laptop computers for use by the delegates at all times (for maximum exchange of benefit, one laptop will be assigned to each pair of delegates) as well as free calculation software developed by SS Wilson Associates, Consulting Engineers (one copy per delegate).

Course Fees: $1,200.00


IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Institute staff is also prepared to deliver similar seminars and courses on noise groups of government officials in their offices provided that suitable lecture rooms are made available. Substitute material will be presented in lieu of the field trips (field trips may still be performed based on suitable sites to be selected by the government officials in their locale).
